History of Patna Planetarium

The idea of building the Planetarium was developed during the tenure of Shri Satyendra Narain Sinha – the Chief Minister of Bihar. He laid the Foundation Stone of the Planetarium in the year 1989 and the construction work was then started. The overall construction was managed by the Bihar Council of Science & Technology till final completion with the total cost of the project being nearly 11 Crore Rupees. The Planetarium was completed in a span of 5 years and was inaugurated on 21st March 1993 by the erstwhile Chief Minister of Bihar - Shri Laloo Prasad Yadav, after which the Planetarium was opened for the general public. The Planetarium was dedicated to the memory of named of the former Prime Minister of India Smt. Indira Gandhi and thus named after her. Today the Indira Gandhi Planetarium is visited by tourists from all across the world.

Conveniently located in Indira Gandhi Science Complex, at Bailey Road in Patna city, it holds numerous activities to attract & entertain the visitors like film screenings, exhibitions, competitions & seminars on astronomy & related topics. The Planetarium has a modern state-of –the art projection system, well-maintained complex and a chic ambience which makes it one of the best Planetariums across the world. The main hall has 276 seats and a separate venue is present for holding large events, conferences or workshops. The huge dome-shaped projection screen is utilised for screening the movies in which the audience needs o look towards the roof to view the movie giving an amazing feeling of watching the night-sky with all its stars, moon & other astronomical bodies & planets. The crystal clear sound quality of the astronomical science movies makes the overall experience a truly memorable one. The planetarium is thus an important tourist attraction of Patna which has both educational and entertainment value, making the subject of astronomy an interesting one for all who come here.
