Established in 1973, Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik Udyan, Patna is one of the 16 largest zoos in India. Also called as the Sanjay Gandhi Botanical and Zoological Garden or Patna Zoo it is spread across an area of approximately 152.95 acres. Away from the hustle-bustle of city life it is located near Bailey Road in Patna. Serving as a as a green lung of the city it has nearly 800 animals belonging to 110 different species as well as a wide variety of plants and trees. The park consists of a big water pond, numerous walking trails with greenery spread all around. Nature lovers will love to wander around and admire the rare variety of trees and plants spread all around the sprawling park.

The Zoo boosts of an amazing collection of animals which attracts young and old alike. They include one-horned rhinoceros, , lions, tigers giraffes, zebras, elephants, leopards, hippopotamuses, and different species of monkeys, birds, deer, etc. Utmost care is taken in providing a clean and hygienic environment to the animals.

Machalli Ghar: Located in an artificially made island in the water ponds the Fish Museum (aquarium) is house to more than thirty varieties of fish. One needs to buy a separate ticket to visit the aquarium.

Trees & Plants:There are more than 300 varieties of trees, shrubs and herbs in the park which provide greenery and a refreshing atmosphere to the park.

Toy Train at Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik UdyanToy Train: A five compartment Toy Train runs at regular intervals during the day offering a fun-filled joy ride to the visitors. The train covers all the majors’ areas of the park while completing a complete round. It has open compartments from where the visitors can enjoy the view and take a look around. Indian Railway has provided an old Railway Engine which is on display outside the station much to the delight of the visitors.

Boating: One can enjoy a boat ride in the centrally located water pond in the park premises. Boats can be availed on rent on hourly basis in a group of two or four. One also needs to deposit some amount as security which can be taken back after the trip.

Battery Operated Cars: Several battery operated cars ply in the park for the benefit of the visitors. They are especially beneficial for the elderly and small children, who may get tired while walking around the sprawling park. These cars stop at enclosures and follow a predefined route so that people can admire the wild animals. One can avail these cars at nominal fees.

Elephant Ride: Visitors can also enjoy an Elephant Ride provided by the Zoo administration. It starts from a designated spot and covers a pre-defined trail. These ride though depends on the availability of elephants ion that particular day.

Rules to be Followed at Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik Udyan

  • One needs to maintain cleanliness while visiting the Zoo. Waste, plastic bags, left-over items has to be thrown only in dust-bins provided at different locations in the park
  • Offering any eatables to the animals is strictly prohibited
  • No one is allowed to enter the enclosures of birds or animals
  • Plucking flowers or damaging the plants or property is not allowed and strict action can be taken against you
  • Safety precautions have to be followed as specified by the park administration while taking a Joy-train, Boat or elephant ride
