Religious Destinations in Patna

Padri Ki Haveli

One of the oldest churches in capital city Patna, Padri ki Haveli was built in the year 1772. It has the distinction of oldest of all the churches built in Bihar state. It is a seventy feet length and forty feet wide building whose height is fifty feet. The then Venetian architect from Calcutta had designed this magnificent monument. Today it has emerged into one of the prime tourist attractions in Patna city.

Takth Sri Patna Sahib

The followers of Sikhism religion from around the world visit Patna that is one of the holiest sites due to the presence of Takht Shri Patna Sahib Gurudwara. It is the birthplace of 10th Guru of Sikhism religion, Guru Gobind Singh who took birth here 1666. He moved to Anandpur later but spent his early childhood years in Patna. Other Gurus namely Guru Nanak and Guru Tegh Bahadur used to visit Patna in 1509 in 1666 respectively. It is located in the north-eastern part of Patna and is a sacred place for the Sikhs. It is one of the pilgrimage destination of Patna. Some of the relics of the tenth guru are also preserved in the Takht Sri Patna Sahib.

Patthar ki Masjid

Patthar ki Masjid is one of the few Muslim pilgrimage centers in the city. Located on the Ganges River banks, this mosque was built by Mughal King Jahangir’s son Parvez Shah in the year 1621 by using only stones. The mosque was therefore named Pathar Ki Masjid due to its unique architecture. Other places of importance for Muslims in Patna include Afghan styled architecture of Sher Shah Suri Masjid or Shershahi mosque built by Sher Shah Suri in 1540-1545 and famous Maner Sharif Dargah where eminent pir Makhdum Daulat died in 1608.

Begu Hajjam Mosque

Having distinction of oldest of all mosques in Patna city, Begu Hajjam Mosque was built in the year 1510 by Khan Muazzam Nazir Khan when this region was under the rule of Alauddin Shah Sultan of Gaur. The walls of this mosque provide thorough details about its construction that have been meticulously inscribed on its walls. The uniqueness about the name of this mosque is that it hasn’t been named after its founder but instead it is named after its renovator namely Begu Hajjam who is said to renovate it in 1645. Glazed tiles had been used to build this mosque that make it unique and highly appealing. Its richly decorated ornamented structure appeals all irrespective of religious faith. Mahavir Mandir

Mahavir Mandir in is one of the most visited Hindu temples in Patna. Dedicated to Lord Hanuman, famous Mahavir Mandir of Patna is holiest of the selected temples in the country. Patan Devi Temple

Agam Kuan

It is said that this well exists since Mauryan Emperor Ashoka’s period which is still located east in Patna city. Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik UdyanSanjay Gandhi Biological Park, popularly known as 'Patna Zoo' is home to more than 100 species of animals and 300 species of trees, Plants and shrubs. It is one of the most popular hangout of Patnaites and everyone who visits Patna. This park was set up in 1969 and since 1973 it has been declared as a biological Park. There is a lake inside the park with boating facility, you can also rent a bicycle to visit the entire zoo. Sadaqat Ashram

The headquarters of National University of Bihar Vidyapeeth today, the famous Sadaqat Ashram once served as residence of country’s first president Dr. Rajendra Prasad who spent his life’s last few days at this place after his superannuation. A small museum that Sadaqat Ashram houses has many rare collections of the personal belongings of first president. Sinha Library

Established in the year 1924, Sinha Library of Patna is also denoted with Srimati Radhika Sinha Institute Library. It had been built by Dr. Sachidananda Sinha in the memory of his wife Srimati Radhika Devi. A portion of the house was turned into library then. Today this library has huge collection of books on literature, biography, sociology, history, philosophy and other themes and maintains its reputation of being region’s largest library.

Gandhi Maidan

Earlier known as Patna Lawn, Gandhi Maidan is located near the banks of Ganges River, this historic ground is named after great freedom fighter and visionary leader of India, Mahatma Gandhi. It symbolizes Bihar’s contribution in country’s freedom movement. This was the place where several towering leaders addressed the nation. Leaders like Rajendra Prasad, Nehru, Anugrah Narayan Sinha et al would organize meetings here for country’s freedom strategy. Khuda Bakhsh Oriental Library

Khuda Bakhsh Oriental Library in Patna is one of the few national libraries of India that houses huge collection of more than 18000 rare Persian, Urdu and Arabic manuscripts. The library has preserved over 2000 Rajput and Mughal paintings. Its collection of books represent many genre. Other notable collections of this library include 850 audio and 550 video tapes on several eminent personalities. Wide collection of letters from eminent personalities preserved in this library make it a must visit place in the state capital. Khuda Baksh Oriental Library is located at the banks of Ganges River. Maulavi Khuda Baksh Khan had opened this library for public in 1891 and since then it was named after him. During its early stage of the establishment it housed 4000 personal manuscripts of Khuda Baksh out of that 1400 represented those from his father Maulvi Muhammad Baksh. This library was made to become an institute of national importance in 1969 due to its valuable collections o historical and intellectual value.

Moin-ul-Haq Stadium

With its distinction of largest in Bihar state capital Patna based Moin-ul-Haq Stadium is great place to be. It houses a swimming pool and cricket academy besides facilitating various other sports activities. Named after sportsperson Moin-ul-Haque, it has identity of one of the few selected cricket stadiums in the country. Its big size makes this stadium second largest cricket stadium after Kolkata’s Eden Gardens.
