Sports in Patna

Sports is defined as an organized, competitive and physical activity which requires commitment and a fair play. Alike the other states of India, sports is also predominant in Patna. Also, like other states cricket is the most favored sports in the state. However, it differs from other games in terms of the higher level profits involved and the huge organizational set up. There are several cricket grounds located around the city of Patna. The most notable one is the Moin-ul-Haq Stadium. The stadium has a swimming pool and a cricket academy. The stadium had been a venue for one day international cricket matches and also several national sporting events. Patna, also has a golf course, with the total area of 165 acres. Patna, also hosted the woman’s Kabaddi world cup- the first ever to be held in the city. It was held in the Patliputra Sports Complex,  Kankarbagh, in 2012 and India won the finals, defeating Iran. Other sports played in Patna are cricket, football, and table tennis.

Water  sports  has been introduced in the Ganges near Patna, with jet skis and water events for the adventure sports people. People of Patna can enjoy a 20 minute jet ski ride and a 20 minute ride on the speedboat. Elaborate safety arrangements have been made. Three divers, including a navy rescuer will watch the jet skis and the boats. It is mandatory to wear a jacket and not to ride after its dark. There was a Patna Marathon in 2012. The aim was to unite people across social, political and ideological divides during the festive sporting environment.

The state government, has been imparting importance, on the need for promotion of sports and games among the youth. But very little has been done in this direction, to make the students participate in such activities, in the colleges and universities. Patna University, holds a prominent place, in the fields of sports and athletics, at the national level. The University produced players like C. Prasad, captain of the Indian football team.

However, there is room for immense development in the growth of the sporting activities. Patna University, will constitute a sports and cultural activities board. Inter and Intra college activities, to be held regularly to attract more and more students. Patna will host 40th Sub-Junior National Basketball Championship to be held at Patliputra Sports Complex from August 18-25, 2013. A total of 52 teams will participate in this week long competition. The matches will be played under floodlights at the Pataliputra Sports Complex-indoor court and two venues of the Bihar military police synthetic basketball court.
